This line of work focuses on the conservation, restoration, and management of ecosystems to enhance biodiversity, human wellbeing, and the provision of essential ecosystem services. A central component is the restoration of soil health, including the recovery of its structure, function, microbiology, and biodiversity, recognizing soil as a foundational element of resilient ecosystems. Through the strategic use of geospatial tools, this work supports evidence-based decision-making and fosters regenerative landscapes that benefit both people and nature.

Research areas:

  1. Spatial analysis and modelling based on geographic information systems (GIS) to identify priority areas, monitor ecological changes, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
  2. Application and scaling up of nature-based solutions—such as reforestation and agroecology—to address environmental challenges while delivering environmental, social, and economic co-benefits.
  3. Assessment and demonstration of the economic value of restored ecosystems and exploration of mechanisms for environmental compensation.
